Caring for your end grain cutting board
If properly cared for, your end grain cutting board can last a lifetime
Like most items around your home, the more care you put into it, the better the performance and results. This is no different for your end grain cutting board.
Cleaning your board:
1] Ideally, you have the ability to wash your cutting board immediately after use. I have had success with hot water, a wash cloth and soapy water. I have also heard of others rinsing it in the sink. In my opinion, if you do not need to run it under the tap, then go the wash cloth route. In any case the quicker you can get the board clean, the better.
Note: Do not soak or submerge your end grain cutting board! Yes, that also means no dishwashers as well.
2) After washing your board, dry immediately and let it sit on the cutting board feet. This will help to prevent any moisture build-up, or even worse, any potential bowing/warping of the wood. The best place for the cutting board is on the counter top. This allows for good airflow around the board so that it can breathe. Do not store sitting on its side.
3] If your cutting board retains any odours, cutting a lemon in half, and rubbing it over the board does wonders. Let sit for a few minutes. Wipe thoroughly with soap and warm water, and then dry.
Tip: Cant get rid of that smell? Grab some vinegar and repeat the process.
4] If you find that your board has a food stain, you can put some baking soda on the board and rub the stain with a half cut lemon. Make sure to rinse with hot water and dry with a clean towel.
Tip: Stains should never really appear if you are conditioning your board regularly and cleaning the board after use.
Caring for your board:
Good news, each end grain cutting board comes with a jar of your very own board butter. This board butter is made of locally sourced beeswax, walnut oil, and orange oil. All natural to protect and bring out the beauty in your board!
FAQ's:
How long does it last? Very good question. I have been making my way through my own jar for the last 4 years now and I still have roughly 1/4 left.
How should I store my board butter? Another great question! Room temperature in a cupboard away from sunlight would be best.
How do I apply the butter to my board? Yup, you guessed it, solid question! You can get away with using paper towel or step up to cheesecloth.
Tip: You don't need to throw out the cheesecloth after every use. Place in a ziploc bag and store with the board butter.
Tip: Your end grain cutting board comes preconditioned with the supplied board butter. For the first few months, it would be worthwhile conditioning it every 2 weeks or so. After that, once every few months is perfect, but no need to worry, you will notice it losing its shine and will be wanting to condition it.
To raw meat or not to raw meat? Personally, I keep raw meat off of my cutting board. This is a personal choice and something your end grain cutting board will work with one way or the other.
